“I am programmed for intimacy.”

This month’s Torchwood got a little weird and definitely had the adult slant which means… it’s perfectly Torchwood.
“What has made billionaire Neil Redmond emerge from his long seclusion? Captain Jack knows the answer, and is prepared to go to any lengths to prove it.

A couple of years ago, Neil Redmond was in a terrible accident. His recovery has been long and slow, but now he’s back and looking better than ever. Much better than ever.

Dark forces have been behind Neil’s transformation. Dark forces that Jack has been hunting for a long time. But Captain Jack’s never been able to resist the darkness.”
Doppelganger Robot, the Committee, more conspiracy, and Jack Harkness is right in the middle of it trying to get to the bottom of things trying to turn the tables.

What we get this month is a wonderful tale of jealousy, love lost, intrigue, and even a little passion.

This story does a great job of pushing boundaries just like the television series did by putting an unconventional relationship right at the heart of the drama. This tale even has  a little cautionary tale hidden in it about our love affair with technology and the almost voyeuristic capabilities it can afford us…be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

I’ll admit I was surprised that Jack was back but not for the final tale of series one. I figured that Jack would be back at the end to put a bow on this whole business with “The Committee” the fact that he won’t be makes me wonder if this storyline will continue on into series 2 or if it will actually be concluded via Gwen Cooper in next month’s series ending episode? Time will tell on that one.

This story has some flashback elements but the bulk of the characters are portrayed by two actors. John Barrowman obviously nails his performance as Jack but to my mind Steven Cree as Neil Redmond had the bulk of the responsibility in carrying this tale and he did it well.

Last thing to crow about in this story is… now that the series has circled back to Jack this is the first story that really didn’t have to remind us who Jack was or what he’s really been up to. There are some nods to let us know when this takes place but really this story is almost a standalone. If you take out the Committee and just insert some vague shadowy corporation you’d still have a great tale and I really appreciated that. 4.5 out of 5 stars for a very compelling new tale which had me thinking to myself… Thank Goodness Big Finish is making new Torchwood!

Robot sex? Big Finish continues to surprise me with just how loyal they are to the original properties. I can definitely see this happening in season two of the televised Torchwood.
