[UPDATED 8/22/2018] Now that it has been announced that Fox is pulling the Buffy license from Dark Horse, Season 12 has been confirmed as the final comic book season. On the day of this update Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 12 – The Reckoning #3 just hit comic shops leaving just one more issue in the long running series. Seemed like it was time to complete this Buffy Reading Order. The upside it all this is at least Joss Whedon got to step back in to wrap it up.
Where will the Buffy legacy go from here? A new television is in the works. Its still too early to tell what exactly that will be. Initial reports have been conflicting but hey, every generation there is a slayer, right?
I recently devoured both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel television series, as I have mentioned numerous times on the podcast much to Melanie’s annoyance. I was at the prime age during the shows’ initial run and avid watcher of Buffy up until season 4. I didn’t stop watching BECAUSE of season 4, I just stopped watching television in general at the time. Angel, on the other hand, I had no interest in. A spin-off with Angel, Cordelia and later Wesley, my least favorite Buffy characters? No, thank you.
Yeah, I was wrong. Even though it took the better part of two decades for me to right that wrong I am SO glad I did. After revisiting the first half of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and experiencing the 2nd half for the first time I wanted more. Despite the character of Angel still not doing much for me throughout the rewatch of Buffy I figured it was time to finally give the spin-off a shot.
Wow! Again, the carryover characters we my least favorite on Buffy but throughout the Angel series they are developed so well and so organically that two of them are now among my favorite in the Buffyverse. I smashed through all five seasons with the quickness and despite one of the coolest series finales of all time… I STILL wanted more.
And so, it was time. Not only are there years of Buffy comics but there are also years of Angel comics at this point. Better yet, Angel picks up right after the final episode of the show. Even better than that, these are official canon! Either plotted by, written by or at the very least signed off on by Joss Whedon.
Enough of the fangasm. Here is the Buffyverse comic book reading order for only the stories considered canon. Ready for Buffy the Vampire season 8 and Angel season 6? This is where you want to be.

Hey, thank you for checking it out and taking the time to comment! Yeah, this list isn’t every Buffy/Angel comic book but every Buffy/Angel comic considered “official canon”. At least, according to the sources that we could find. I was particularly torn on some of the Angel stuff. Part of the series is canon yet some is not? It’s mostly a matter of which stuff is either written by or at least acknowledged as official canon by Joss Whedon. Of course, it is possible we may have missed some stuff!
