“Starfish? It’s raining alien starfish?!”

This month’s Torchwood is the final story of Big Finish’s Series one and shows exactly why Torchwood is back and more importantly why they are back in the nick of time.

“Gwen Cooper has triumphed against impossible odds before, but now she’s finally met her match: Roger Pugh, Planning Officer for Cardiff City Council.

Mr Pugh doesn’t believe the world needs Torchwood. Gwen sets out to prove him wrong. For Mr Pugh, it’s a day that’ll change his life. If he can survive it.”

Gwen cooper sets out to impress upon the Cardiff City Planning Officer that he needs to push through the paperwork so Torchwood can go on saving the world, but in order to do that she essentially has to take him on a Torchwood ride along.

Now meeting with the planning committee’s main guy might not sound like an impressive series finale but it’s actually exactly the kind of series finale that subtly says… “see?! THIS is why we need Torchwood, because this kind of weird stuff happens all the time!”

At first it seemed a little strange that Jack Harkness wasn’t involved but this story wasn’t about Jack, it was about Torchwood continuing on with or without him and it’s a nice way of saying this series will go on too. With series 2 trailers already out and with this first series in the can as a proof of concept, I think it’s safe to say Torchwood IS indeed back, and in quite capable hands at Big Finish!

If this story disappoints me it might be in that it leaves this whole conspiracy story (which started with the series) just dangling and unresolved at the end of this first series… I’m not quite clear on whether that story is properly resolved or will continue to continue on into series 2 but I don’t think we’ve heard the last about them just yet.

This story had a nice sized cast compared to some of the previous stories which consisted of very limited numbers, it featured Gwen, Andy, Roger and more. The inclusion of Andy was a nice touch of comedy. The sound was incredibly well done and never once felt off or distracting.

Now I said I was disappointed that I didn’t get closure on that committee storyline but really? The absence of it made this episode much more standalone, it also had some nice nods back to the very first episode of televised Torchwood as well as some nods to what they’ll be doing to start series 2. You better believe that I will in fact be back for series 2 but before we go there… More Than This ended series one just as strongly as Jack Harkness started it. I’m giving this story 5 out of 5 stars as a spot on way to finish this block. I can’t wait for more.

Are you excited to see Torchwood return to the Cardiff and potentially the Hub? You can let me know in the comments below or by shooting us a message to letters(at)grawlixpodcast.com.
